The Healthier Shopping Guide: Simple Swaps and Smarter Choices
Couldn't load pickup availability
Ever stood in the shop reading the back of a packet, wondering if it's actually any good?
That's why I made this.
The Healthier Shopping Guide is an online guide to the better options available in South Africa - in the shops, online, and direct from local farms and makers. These are the options I've found and researched, many of which we use in our own home, with an honest take on each one.
What's inside
29 chapters covering what families actually buy every week: bread, pizza bases, wraps, flour, cooking oils, butter, milk, yoghurt, cheese, alternative and dairy free options, cereals, rusks, sweeteners, crackers, chips and savoury snacks, sauces, meat and eggs, sweets and chocolates, cookies, snack bars, spreads and nut butters, choc chips, pasta, couscous, salt, stock and cooldrinks.
In every chapter you'll find:
- What to look out for on the label, so you can judge any product in any shop, not just the ones I've listed
- My picks, each with a photo, a link, where to buy it and an honest note
- Badges at a glance - gluten free, dairy free, egg free, refined sugar free, seed oil free and more
If your family deals with allergies or intolerances
This is where a lot of the work went. Gluten free, dairy free, egg free and nut free options are flagged throughout, so you can scan a chapter and find what works for your family without reading every label yourself.
It lives on your phone (or your laptop)
This isn't a PDF you download and forget about. Log in with your email and it's there - open it in the shop, on your phone, while you're standing in front of the shelf wondering which one to pick.
It keeps growing
It's a living guide, updated as new products launch, links change and better options appear.
A few honest things
Whole foods come first, always. Real fruit, veggies, eggs and protein beat anything in this guide, and they're usually cheaper too. The products in here are for the moments you were going to buy the processed version anyway.
Think of it as a menu, not a shopping list. Nobody needs everything in it.
